Moving to Indonesia
Delays are common to all forms of transport in Indonesia, including national and international flights. You will save yourself a good deal of stress if you keep your schedule as flexible as possible.
By Air
The fastest way to reach Bali is by air directly to the Airport from Bali the Ngurah Rai. There are no direct flights to Bali. All airline companies will have at least one stop-over as in Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore or Jakarta.
You can book your fight to one of the major hub, which gives you the opportunity to travel before your study and explore the region. Keep in mind, that the social visa is an one-time entry permit. It is recommendate to travel before and after.
On small budget, you can save money by choosing a not direct fly to Bali. In the same way you can save on small pocket money, choosing a hub and continue your journey with a low cost carrier as Air Asia, Lion Air or Tiger Airways.
Air Way
- Jakarta’s Sukarno-Hatta Airport and Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport are the main air gateways into Indonesia.
- Fares depend on the airline, ticket type, and travel date, but are typically good value considering the mileage covered and time saved.
By Boot
If you are up to a time intensive travel experience, you can choose to take a PELNI boat from Benoa Harbor in Bali to Labuan Bajo, which operates three times a month. There are also PELNI boats from Benoa to Ende (about 2 days 3 hrs). Maumere (about 2 days 5 hrs), and Larantuka (about 3 days 11 hrs). The timetables are unreliable and depend on the season. Sea Way
- Public ferries run regularly on the shorter crossings between neighbouring islands.
- There are also speedboats, which take less than a third of the time of Pelni vessels.
- Ferry: Bali (Gilimanuk) - Banyuwangi (Java)
- Ferry: Bali (Padang Bai) - Lombok
- Speed boat: Bantan - Jakarta
- Speed boat: Bali - Lombok
- Speed boat: Bali - Gilis
- Charter: There are several charter companies, which offer fix routes and costumized.
Another popular route is to join one of the frequently offered ferry or fast boat between Lombok and Bali or Java and Bali. These tour boats usually stop at Komodo and take somewhere between two or four hours.
The alternative way to reach Bali should only be chosen if you have plenty of time to travel.
By Land
The common: Car, Bus, Train, Motor Cycle
Land Line
- Bus
- They are cheap, easy to book, and leave roughly on time.
- They’re also slow, cramped and often plain terrifying:
- Train
- They are often preferred over buses for being more comfortable and reliable.
- Central train stations are generally far more centrally situated than the typically far-flung bus terminals.
- Car
- Car-rental agencies abound in tourist hot spots such as Bali. Passengers in the front of a vehicle must wear a seatbelt by law.
- Traffic in Indonesia drives on the left and drivers must always carry an international driving licence and the vehicle registration documents.
- Motorbike
- All motorcyclists must wear a helmet. The police carry out regular spot checks, and you’ll be fined for any infringements.
- Rental motorbikes vary from small scooters to trail bikes. Prices start at Rp40,000 per day without insurance.
- Urban Transport
- Colour-coded minibus, angkots, bemos, oplets or microlets run fixed circuits and cost from 1.000 to 4.000 Rp.
- (G-)Ojek (motorbikes taxi) cost around 8.000 Rp for a short trip in touwn.
